The other is the full-day volcano boat, which runs about fourteen hours and works through the caldera islands in sequence — Nea Kameni, the hot springs, Thirasia, then Oia for the sunset. You are ashore several times.
Both leave every day in season. Neither is a ferry, so you are not choosing between transport options — you are choosing what you want the day to be shaped around.
You cannot see the caldera wall while standing on it. From sea level the layering is obvious: the pale band of Minoan pumice sits on darker older rock, and the villages read as a thin white line on top. It is a three-minute realisation that no viewpoint gives you.
Thirasia broke away from the main island and has a few hundred residents. Palea Kameni's warm sulphur springs are reachable only by swimming from a boat. Nea Kameni is a bare cone that last erupted in 1950. None of the three has a road you can drive to.
Read the itineraries and you find between one and three hours in the water on the five-hour cruises. That is most of the trip. If you are not going to swim, you are paying for a boat that will be stationary for half of your day.
Oia's sunset draws a standing crowd along a narrow lane. On a boat you get the same sun over the same rim with a seat and a drink. Departure times slide by about three and a half hours across the year, so check yours against the month you travel.
These are the two real options and they are not close substitutes. One is a long lunch on the water. The other is a hiking day that happens to travel by sea.

The wind here is seasonal and it is measurable. Across thirty years of records, 75% of July days and 73% of August days blow from the north, and the mean longest unbroken northerly spell in those two months is 17 days.
That wind is a nuisance rather than a danger, and it is why crews sometimes reverse a route or move a swim stop. Winter has the real gales: 41% of January days reach Beaufort 6 or more, against 11% in May and June.
Book for the early part of your stay if you can. Every one of these six cancels free 24 hours ahead, so a boat on day two leaves you a second chance on day four if the sea gets up.
If you get seasick, think hard about the fourteen-hour trip. It is a long day with several transfers and no easy way off in the middle.
If you will not swim, the catamarans lose most of their value. Look at a land tour instead — the same coastline is on the itinerary of every island drive.
