The Best Time to Visit Santorini Greece

Short answer: late April to early June, or the second half of September into October. This page is about the decision rather than the conditions, so it deals in crowds, opening hours and what your money buys. For temperature and wind, the weather page has thirty years of records behind it.

What each season is actually like

April and May. Everything reopens on 1 April, including the cable car on its long summer timetable. The wind is at its lightest of the year, the wildflowers are out on the eastern slopes, and the rim is walkable at midday. The sea is cold until late May.

June to August. Peak in every sense. The longest days of the year, the warmest sea from August, the biggest crowds and the most wind. The boats run and they get rerouted.

September and October. The best swimming of the year and a rim that empties through October. Sunset comes in fast, which shortens the evening but also thins the crush in Oia.

November to March. Cheap, quiet and genuinely different. Many operators stop, the cable car opens for about three hours a day, and the sun sets just after five.

The crowd calendar, and what causes it

The crush on this island is not spread evenly through the day and it is not really about hotel guests. It is about ships. A large cruise ship anchors in the caldera and tenders thousands ashore into a cable car rated at 1,200 people an hour in both directions, and those people go to the same two villages.

Which means you can sidestep most of it without leaving early or paying more. Work out when the ships are in, then be somewhere else.

That gives you a very usable pattern. Oia is quiet before ten and after nine in the evening. Fira is worst between eleven and four. The interior villages, Pyrgos, Megalochori and Emporio, are quiet almost always, because the coaches that reach them carry twelve to twenty-four people rather than a thousand.

What is open, and what is not

The three things that change with the season are the cable car, the excavation timetable and the tour list itself. From 1 April to 31 October the cable car runs continuously from seven in the morning until nine, ten or eleven at night depending on the month. From 1 November it drops to two windows a day, and from 1 December to two short ones.

The excavation at Akrotiri keeps its long hours through the summer season and its short Monday and Thursday timetable all year. Boat operators thin out from November; two of the listings here say in writing that their winter departures start earlier because the sun does.

What it costs at each end of the year

Tour fares here are the operators' own and do not swing seasonally the way accommodation does. What changes is availability: in July and August the catamarans and the sunset trips fill days out, so the cheap option is gone rather than more expensive. In April and October you can usually book three days ahead and take your pick of the day you want.

Sunset, and how it moves your day

The sun sets at about 20:41 at the June solstice and just after 17:00 in early December, a swing of roughly three and a half hours. That is not trivia: it is the reason a sunset cruise leaves at three in the afternoon in May, why an evening wine tour starts earlier in October, and why an August evening in Oia has three hours of people arriving before anything happens.
